So I’m a big fan of Twitter. I get to meet a lot of people, hear their stories and follow their journey. Twitter is an investment with people. Like all things, Twitter has key rules that need to be followed. If these rules are followed it will enhance the experience for all of us. Here are some of my commandments.
1. Don’t be a Twitter pimp. Some folks are so obsessed by numbers, that they will do anything to gain followers. Don’ be that person. Seems unauthentic to me. A Twitter pimp is: “hey follow me and I will follow you.” Then after they “follow” someone, they ignore them.
2. Don’t go overboard with your tweets. This is not black and white, but I have to unfollow people because they tweet the mundane. Work, Home, Bed etc. On the occasion this is no biggie, but on a daily basis this can be irritating.. Truthfully, I don’t care when you arrive at work or home…Just saying!
3. Follow people: There is nothing worse then a “corporate” Twitter account. The point of Twitter is relationship and communication. Twitter will lose value if it just becomes a place to dispense information. Twitter is about relationship, people follow you, you follow people.
4. A lot of people think Twitter is work. Here’s the deal, you don’t have to capture all the discussion that is taking place. You can jump in and out and it’s not a big deal. We all have lives to live, people to see and things to do. Don’t let Twitter control you, that’s when it’s no longer fun!
5. Block people: It’s okay to block people, you don’t have to say yes to everyone.
