I get that question all the time, of course the answer depends on the moment. Sometimes I want to totally focus on HELP, other times I remind myself that it’s the local church that will change the world. HELP wants to help that local church and of course we could “be” that local church.
I’ve gotten some really good possibilities here in Austin, some folks that want to partner with me. I have a ton of respect for them and how they do church. Of course, Necole and I are praying about moving back to Raleigh to launch HELP there while the current team stays here in Austin.
Back to church planting… I really just don’t know. Of course I want to, I think about it all the time. I feel like I have so many visions and dreams that I would love to flesh out with a faith community. But, if I do plant another church, here are some current dreams that I’m thinking through:
Missional: Really missional, we would meet on Sunday. But it will be SIMPLE. The focus will not be gatherings but homes and personal domains and serving the city. Sunday would be a place to gather, worship, repent, dream, pray, and love each other. I don’t want to feel “rushed,” how do we bring back the spirituality and slowness that is needed?
Culture: Engage culture, live in culture, redeem culture, transform culture. How do we see the church as a fabric of the community, not some sort of Sunday gathering and then we disappear into thin air?
Gospel: What if the local church was bringing good news to the city…? What if that was our main goal? Not numbers, buildings, budgets…But good news!!! We are the church, and we are here to serve our city, we want to be a blessing to the community!
Justice: Refuse to be quiet and ignore the injustice that takes place in the city. What if we fought for those who suffer…? We can be voice of hope! We can love the homeless person, the single mom, the local orphaned kid who has been abandoned!
Global: Of course this is huge…Go into all the world!!! C’mon..Its vital. We can go into all the world and show love and serve and be the hands and feet of Jesus. Love the city and love the world!
OK so, yes this gets me pumped, the adrenaline is flowing, the passion is burning the possibilities are endless. Ah! But at the end-of-the-day, it’s so darn hard. And that is what separates dreamers from leaders-history will tell me what one I am?

Bro,
If you go to Raleigh, I know people already doing the simple missional thing. Let me know.
Peace to you brother,
From the Middle East
