In 2004 some friends and I sat in a cafe in Wilmington, NC. We dreamed up this thing called HELP. Back then, there was not a lot of buzz from the church in-regards to the social issues facing our world.
Of course that has changed, now there are some amazing non-profits who are doing great work as they fight against injustice. This new movement of revolutionaries brings deep hope to my heart that the church is becoming “sent” into the world to show the love of Jesus in ways that are practical and vital.
Of course every movement has a downside. These days, it seems everyone wants to launch a new non-profit initiative; social justice is all the rave, its trendy and cool.
So, how do we discern which visions are real and legit, and which visions are led by people who desire to run a cool trendy non-profit? Here is the thing, while I’m very happy that folks want to do some good in our world, if we are not carful, if we don’t lead well, if we don’t discern well, then we could be more hurtful than helpful.
So, how do we determine the difference? Here is my simple response. Find those servant leaders who weep deeply. You can’t do what we do, without being called and broken. There are many nights that I simply cry, the pain is to deep, the images are haunting and the injustices are all to real. This has nothing to do with running a cool/hip/trendy organization, my passion and drive is to launch a movement that shares the story of the oppressed, so we can show them love and in the process provide some type of hope.
So if someone shares a vision with you, and if you want to know if this person is legit, ask them if they have wept? If they say no, move on and support someone who has!

Chris – great post! I love it all. I have been sort of inwardly suspicious of the trendiness of non-profit humanitarian aid type orgs. This is a great filter. Thanks.
