I wish Barefoot Churchwas written before I planted my first church. It would have saved me a lot of pain and mistakes. This is a book filled with practical action-steps that will help the church embrace the beauty of Sunday and prepare for living out the mission, to love God and love our neighbor; locally and globally.

I would encourage pastors to share this book with their board members, staff members and key church leaders. Take time to process what is at stake here. You will get a behind-the-scenes snapshot of what a living church can be like if we are willing to take risks, move away from the “known” and see how we can truly love our broken world.

Brandon has penned a missional guide…he leads us down a practical pathway that will help us discover some tangible ways that will cause our churches to be more effective.

Though I must warn you, if you’re looking for something easy, or a silver bullet to church growth, you may be disappointed. While the book is practical and helpful, it’s also challenges us to do the “hard” work that is necessary to love people and to see God do amazing works through the local church.

Get the book; read it, pray over it, get together with some other friends, leaders, pastors and discuss the content and it’s potential Kingdom ramifications. Let it challenge you, inspire you, and make you angry.

Agree with it, disagree with it…allow it to help shape you and your church into a deeper missional community, that is striving to live out the principles of God’s Kingdom together.

Let’s go barefoot today…

I get to take some time to process 2010 and plan 2011. I hope to create an 18 month strategic plan for HELP in the next 2-3 weeks. I’m also going to “try” to take some time off. You only get so many Christmas’s with your kids while they’re young. I want to enjoy every moment.

A few things real quick:

I wanted to say thanks to everyone who attended Restore The Innocent event last week. I was very excited that we sold out the event. I loved hearing the conversations after everyone watched Call & Response. Props to Austin New Church, Austin Angels and Restore Austin, it was a pleasure to partner with you. (they did all the work)

We also had a great time this past Friday at the H.E.L.P. Art Show. Sherry, Blanca and Scotty did a phenomenal job sharing their experience in Haiti and ZImbabwe. Photo’s will be displayed at Sodade for the next few months.

In case you missed it, HELP released our end-of-the-year information for those who want/need to give and have it count for 2010 tax-purposes!

FYI, if you have not followed the HELP blog, you should. Amazing stories from Haiti and Zimbabwe!

My family attended Soma Austin yesterday. Have I told you how much I love that church? I’m not sure HELP would be in existence without them. Oh, Sherry Birk shared why she (a single lady) is adopting a little girl from Ethiopia. So proud of her!

So far the best decision HELP has EVER made was to hire Blanca a few months ago.

I don’t get to watch much sports these days. I really don’t miss it. But yesterday I watched the New England/Chicago game in the snow. Loved that!

Have you registered for IC//Orphan yet?

Look forward to announcing a new partnership in Haiti. This partnership will focus on child slavery and human trafficking in 2011.

Yesterday, after service at Soma, a group of us were eating at Torchy’s Tacos, one of their members said this:

Sunday, is basically an after-thought to us, it’s the rest of the week that counts.

Now, I’m not saying don’t do Sunday’s well, matter-of-fact, the service was well done and thoughtful. Yet, it’s not the high-point of the week for this church community.

Also, much of the Sunday gathering had to do with what was going on outside of the gathering, such as serving the local homeless community, building a water-well with Living Waters International, and serve orphans in Zimbabwe, etc!

Just a reminder, that yes Sunday is important, but yet, it’s only one day of the week, and the mission is accomplished on those other six days!

The author tends to focus on a few key areas that he considers primal.

1. Justice: I was a bit surprised, and happy, to find so much focus on the issue of justice. Mark strives to help us re-imagine what scripture states about serving those who are on the underside of power.

2. Hearing God: Throughout the book, there is a huge focus on spiritual disciplines. Praying, scripture reading and doing. Needless to say, the author is humble, passionate and compassionate. He writes with a sense of balance, love and wide-spread knowledge.

There is no doubt, that once we read this book we will have a pathway to live a more missional life, that will in fact help us move back in-time to a profusely, primal version of Christianity, so we can move forward with a vision to see a better way if serving Jesus, and following in His footsteps!

I met Jason (the author) in DC this past summer. He is a great dude, who is “living-out” what he penned.

Some books offer a tremendous balance and Live Sent is one of those books, it has the ability to influence a wide-spread audience, which not only includes church leaders, but also those folks who are called to minister outside the four-walls of the church.

It’s vital for the church to grasp what it means to truly be on mission in our day to day lives, and this book will help us figure out what that mission looks like.

Let me share some quotes:

The Sender (God) delivered His message to us and then writes His message in us and through us for us to deliver to others.

Our mission will always be determined by who or what it is we live for.

That’s our mission as letters from Him. To carry His through word and deed into all the world-both around the corner and around the globe.

I think Live Sent could be used in multiple settings. But, I would highly encourage small groups to read this book and discuss it’s implications. Because of the missional praxis that it offers, if we truly embrace the message, we can live a more missional life, filled with meaning and impact as we all embrace the reality that God calls every Christ-follower to “live-sent” in his or her culture.

I encourage you to buy the book, read it, discuss it, blog it, tweet it and spread the word; that we are all called to “live-sent” as disciples of Jesus!

Here are some ways you can connect with Jason.

If you’ve spent anytime in the church, than you’ve heard “faith without works is dead” probably a million times. So, what is our response? Usually to work! However, here’s the issue: most of our work has been defined by what we do inside the four walls of the local church, such as:

Serve on a committee

Help out with kids.

Serve on the set-up & tear down team, etc!

We could go on and on and on. Now, serving the local church is a good thing. I love the local church. But, we’ve put so much energy in serving the local church, we’ve literally forgotten about those on the other-side-of-the-gate, those who live without God, those who suffer deeply, those who are in need.

Our faith will shine brightest, and our works will bear much fruit, when we go into the darkness and be-light and create beauty. The Church must be on display in the midst of the culture-and remember, you are the church!

So yes…serve the local church. But, don’t allow the local church to keep you away from loving and serving the people who are outside the local church-these are the people that need you the most…! They need to see the Kingdom on display, by your mixture of faith and works.

Also, as members of the local church, we should be doing this together as a whole. Another-words, “we” go out and serve people together as Christ’s church!

He used to come to my Youth Group in Cali every two to three months to preach week-long-revivals, hold all night prayer vigals and we would also do street ministry. We also spent 10 days in Detroit serving his inner-city church that he planted. I used to call him on the phone and spend hours trying to understand the gospel and the church. He dedicated a lot of time to many of us youths from Cali.

Roosevelt was a gifted communicator and had more charisma than one man should be allowed. That said, he was passionate for the gospel, church and youth in particular. He used his gifts to spread the gospel and impact the church.

I found out this weekend that RH died of colon cancer. He was 46 and left behind a wife and two young kids. He will be deeply missed, but he left a legacy for all of us to follow. Someday we will rejoice in heaven together, until that day, we shed tears and remember the good times and ministry that we all shared.

The video above, was his last sermon…He died fighting, preaching and encouraging the saints. He lived for things that are eternal…He died with honor.

R.I.P. Roosevelt Hunter!!!

My following strengths according to Strength Finders:

1. Futurist. (I hate this, hard to focus on the present when you are thinking about the future)
2. Activator. (Start things-always!!!)
3. Belief (Prophetic, passionate, not giving-in, for me its church planting and poverty)
4. Command (this is why people hate me-kidding of course
5. Input (I love to gather info, and develop a strategy based on the info)

For me, when I’m thinking about the future, dreaming of ways to move the church forward and serving the global poor, I feel as if I”m not working, but truly living out my calling. Therefore, I have a deep belief that causes me to research and gather data that will help my dream come alive. I also have a certain level of command, which if used wrong can be a negative, but its vital to have a leader move the dream forward, while also embracing a non-type-A-alpha-male-syndrome (my way or the highway type of leader): which is a weak excuse for leadership-leaders lead with humility, but they also are ruthless and focused. (think Jesus) We have to demand a lot from ourselves and our teams.

My problem, I hate details…I shutdown when I have to focus on details. I’m full of life when I network, vision-cast, collaborate, read, research, preach/speak, write etc! Right now, I’m doing my very best to focus on my strenghs so I can maximize my time and use all resources to bring glory to Jesus, plant more gospel-centered churches that focus on ending global extreme poverty among other things.

Life is already hard, don’t waste to much time doing things that you are not good at or never will be good at! God designed you with certain skills, passions and gifts, it’s our job to make sure we are stewarding them to our best ability!
