I’m beyond A.D.D. and I really struggle with trying to focus on one thing, multitasking is natural. But here is the deal, I need to fight the urge to be productive. Why? Because for many of us the pursuit of productivity and “high impact living,” has left a deep spiritual hole in our lives. I don’t think we are going to make a difference in life if we can’t slow-down enough to commune with Jesus and study scripture. We must have a “center” to our daily living. Hopefully that “center” is mediation, scripture reading, study, and silence. I would rather do less on the to-do list to achieve more in my spiritual life.

It’s a cool crisp morning in Austin. I was reading some scripture this morning and journaling. Truthfully I’ve been dealing with a lot of internal anxiety as of late. (like everybody else I guess) Doing my best to make good decisions, seeking God’s will and praying to hear His voice. Yet every time I read scripture I get reminded that I’m not in control of this life and I have to learn to trust in the way of Jesus, which stinks because His way is a lot different then my way.

So I was thinking about the Thin Space from the Celtic tradition, which means the thinnest of veils between God and oneself. A place of wholeness, a place where I’m so connected to God and His Kingdom that the things of this world become less and the things of God become more.

Fear is removed and trust is instilled.
Anxiety disappears and peace becomes tangible.
Death is replaced with life.
Brokenness turns to wholeness
Confusion vanishes and clarity shines through.

I think God had to remind me this morning that He’s in control. I don’t have to always know everything. When God so chooses he will communicate and bring clarity. (today would be good-see there I go again…) I need to strive to stay in that so-called Thin Space. I don’t want any distance between God and me…Yet too often there seems to be a large chasm. So I need to stay alert and remember the ultimate goal in life is to close the gap between God and myself. And all the others things will be taken care of.

Over the past few weeks I’ve found a rhythm that seems to be producing much fruit and peace. For me as an Elder I take my responsibility serious. I desperately want to know God and become a seeker of God. I start my morning in prayer, Bible reading and theological reflection. (It’s been 10 years since I was in Bible College-its easy to forget)

In order to keep the morning routine fresh and sacred I utilize the following websites: Sacred Space – Daily Prayer Online & The Daily Office. Both of these websites have scripture reading, songs, repentance, Apostles Creed and the Lord’s Prayer etc. I don’t always use them, but they add much value when I do.

The goal is not to “do” but to “be.” I don’t worry about time or feel like I have to accomplish a ton. I just want to settle-down and connect with God.

Also, I always pray for my friends both locally and globally. Again this causes me not be narcissistic. Sometimes our days are so focused on self and what we have to accomplish. When I pray for my friends globally and locally it helps me live their story and remember others.

For instance this morning I prayed for Jacob and Soma. I prayed for my connection in Egypt and for a church planter by the name of McDonald (sp?) in Cape Town and my friends in Raleigh-Visio Dei.

I feel very “centered” when I start my day by slowing-down and embracing prayer. Rhythm
